Cattle farming in Narsaq has ceased – but hope lives on

Last week, the last cattle in Narsaq were slaughtered, and a few animals were moved to the sheep farm Uummannartiivaraq.

Sofus Frederiksen, who has been farming in Narsap Ilua for many years and recently expanded into cattle farming, has now decided to cease operations. After many years of working in agriculture in the area, he is thus putting an end to a long endeavour.

Although Narsap Ilua will now have a new function, hope lives on among the children in the old Uummannartiivaraq.

Four siblings have received two small male cattle as a gift from Sofus – as well as two dairy cows, four heifers, and a bull, which now form the basis of sheep farm.

The children were excited to embark on this new adventure.

“We haven’t named them yet. The little rams need to be milked, and they are so cute. They both have small horns, and we cuddle with them. The barn is a little far from the house – before, we only heard the sheep, but now we can also hear ‘MOOO…’,” says Noah from Uummannartiivaraq.

Noah also explains that unfortunately the bull Ferdinand couldn’t have calves, so they decided to slaughter him.

The children in Uummannartiivaraq – Noah, Alma, Arya and Naja – have sheep, cattle, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats.
