New slaughter data and ram scans show a positive trend in both weight and meat quality for lambs, ewes, and rams compared to the past four years. This year, the average slaughter weight is 15.5 kg for lambs and 18 kg for ewes.
At the same time, quality scans indicate that meat quality in rams is generally higher than last year. Hans Hansen, Special Consultant at the Agricultural Advisory Service, has conducted scans at several sheep farms in collaboration with sheep farmer Asiarpa Motzfeldt. The results show that rams are heavier than in previous years.
“This is partly due to better natural vegetation and higher yields from cultivated fields. The weather has also played a significant role. In addition, the figures show an improvement in the quality of lamb feed compared to previous decades. This reflects the long-term and targeted efforts of sheep farmers to improve feed quality,” explains Hans Hansen.
This positive development highlights the strong professional practices and dedication of sheep farmers. Their efforts not only show measurable results but also contributeto strengthening the quality and reputation of Greenlandic sheep meat.
